COAL INDIA LIMITED (CIL) IS AN INDIAN PUBLIC SECTOR UNDERTAKING AND THE LARGEST GOVERNMENT OWNED COAL PRODUCER IN THE WORLD. HEADQUARTERED IN KOLKATA.  IT IS AN UNDER THE ADMINISTRATIVE CONTROL OF THE MINISTRY OF COAL, GOVERNMENT OF INDIA.

COAL MINING IN INDIA HAD PRIMARILY BEEN A PRIVATE SECTOR ENTERPRISES. THIS CHANGES IN SEP 1956 WHEN THE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA ESTABLISHED ITS OWN COAL COMPANY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (NCDC). THIS WAS TO FULFILL THE FAST GROWING ENERGY REQUIREMENTS IN THE COUNTRY TO SUPPORT RAPID INDUSTRIALIZATION TAKING PLACE THROUGH THE FIVE YEARS PLANS OF THE GOVERNMENT.

IN 1971, THE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA NATIONALIZED ALL THE 214 COKING COAL MINES AND 12 COKE OVENS RUNNING IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR, EXCLUDING THOSE HELD BY TISCP AND IISCO FOR THEIR CAPTIVE USE.  ON 01 JAN 1972, A NEW GOVERNMENT COMPANY BHARAT COKING COAL LIMITED (BCCL) WAS FORMED TO TAKE CONTROL OF THESE NATIONALIZED MINES AND COKE OVEN.

ON 01 NOV 1975, A NEW PUBLIC SECTOR COMPANY COAL INDIA LIMITED (CIL) WAS FORMED TO ENABLE BETTER ORGANIZATIONAL AND OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY IN COAL SECTOR.

CIL STARTED FUNCTIONING IN 1975 WITH FIVE SUBSIDIARY COMPANIES UNDER IT. THESE WERE BHARAT COKING COAL LIMITED (BCCL), EASTERN COALFIELDS LIMITED (ECL), CENTRAL COAL FIELDS LIMITED (CCL), WESTERN COALFIELDS LIMITED (WCL), AND CENTRAL MINE PLANNING AND DESIGN LIMITED (CMPDIL).

PURSUANT TO THE FUEL POLICY OF 1974, CIIL ALSO STARTED THE CONSTRUCTION OF INDIA`S FIRST LOW TEMPERATURE CARBONIZATION PLANT AT DANKUNI IN THE LATE 1970. IT WAS RENAMED AS DANKUNI COAL COMPLEX AND IS ONE OF THE ONLY OPERATIONAL COAL GAS PLANT OF THIS KIND OF THE WORLD.

THE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA HELD 100% EQUITY OF CIL FROM 1975 TILL 2010.

IPO:-

THE COAL INDIA LIMITED (CIL) INITIAL PUBLIC OFFER WAS HELD IN OCT 2010. IT WAS THE LARGEST IPO IN THE HISTORY OF THE INDIAN STOCK MARKET. BIDDING OPENED ON 18 OCT 2010 AND CLOSED ON 21 OCT 2010. THE SHARES WERE LISTED ON BSE AND NSE ON 4 NOV 2010. THE PRICE BAND WAS RS 225 TO RS 245 PER SHARE. THE ISSUE SIZE WAS RS 159944 CRORE. THE IPO WAS OVER SUBSCRIBED BY 14.17 TIMES. ON THE FIRST DAY OF LISTING THE SHARE ROSE 40% ABOVE THE IPO PRICE. CIL BECAME THE FOURTH MAOST VALUED COMPANY ON THE INDIAN STOCK EXCHANGES WITH A MARKET VALUE OF RS 2.16 LAKH CRORE.
