KABADDI TERMINOLOGIES

KABADDI IS BASICALLY A COMBATIVE SPORT, WITH SEVEN PLAYERS ON EACH SIDE; PLAYED FOR A PERIOD OF 40 MINUTES WITH A 5 MINUTES BREAK (20-5-20). THE CORE IDEA OF THE GAME IS TO SCORE POINTS BY RAIDING INTO THE OPPONENT’S COURT AND TOUCHING AS MANY DEFENSE PLAYERS AS POSSIBLE WITHOUT GETTING CAUGHT ON A SINGLE BREATH.

THE ORIGIN OF THE GAME DATES BACK TO PRE-HISTORIC TIMES PLAYED IN DIFFERENT FORMS. THE MODERN KABADDI GAME WAS PLAYED ALL OVER INDIA AND SOME PARTS OF SOUTH ASIA FROM 1930. THE FIRST KNOWN FRAMEWORK OF THE RULES OF KABADDI AS AN INDIGENOUS SPORT OF INDIA WAS PREPARED IN MAHARASHTRA IN THE YEAR 1921 FOR KABADDI COMPETITIONS ON THE PATTERN OF SANJEEVANI AND GEMINI IN A COMBINED FORM. THEREAFTER A COMMITTEE WAS CONSTITUTED IN THE YEAR 1923, WHICH AMENDED THE RULES FRAMED IN 1921. THE AMENDED RULES WERE APPLIED DURING THE ALL INDIA KABADDI TOURNAMENT ORGANIZED IN 1923.

THE ALL INDIA KABADDI FEDERATION WAS FORMED IN THE YEAR 1950 TO LOOK AFTER THE PROMOTION OF THE GAME AND THE SENIOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP STARTED FROM THE YEAR 1952. THE NEW BODY, AMA¬TEUR KABADDI FEDERATION OF INDIA (AKFI) CAME IN TO EXISTENCE FROM THE YEAR 1972 AFFILIATED TO INDIAN OLYMPIC ASSOCIATION (IOA) WITH A VIEW TO POPULARIZE THE GAME IN INDIA & NEIGHBORING COUNTRIES OF ASIA. AFTER FORMATION OF THIS BODY, KABADDI TOOK A NEW SHAPE AND NATIONAL LEVEL COMPETITIONS STARTED FOR JUNIOR AND SUB-JUNIOR BOYS & GIRLS ALSO.

RAIDER:-

THE PLAYER WHO ENTERS THE OPPONENT’S HALF TO TAG OR TOUCH DEFENDERS AND SCORE POINTS.

DEFENDER:-

THE PLAYERS WHO TRY TO STOP THE RAIDER FROM TAGGING AND RETURNING TO THEIR HALF.

RAID:-

THE ACT OF A RAIDER ENTERING THE OPPONENT’S HALF TO SCORE POINTS.

CANT:-

THE CONTINUOUS CHANTING OF “KABADDI, KABADDI” BY THE RAIDER TO PROVE THAT THEY ARE NOT INHALING WHILE RAIDING.

TAG:-

THE ACT OF TOUCHING AN OPPONENT TO SCORE A POINT.

TACKLE:-

THE ATTEMPT BY DEFENDERS TO CATCH AND HOLD THE RAIDER TO PREVENT THEM FROM RETURNING TO THEIR HALF.

ANKLE HOLD:-

A DEFENSIVE MOVE WHERE THE DEFENDER GRABS THE RAIDER’S ANKLE TO STOP THEM.

BACK HOLD:-

A DEFENSIVE MOVE WHERE THE DEFENDER GRABS THE RAIDER FROM BEHIND.

CHAIN FORMATION:

A DEFENSIVE STRATEGY WHERE DEFENDERS HOLD HANDS TO FORM A CHAIN TO TACKLE THE RAIDER.

LOBBY:

THE AREA ON EITHER SIDE OF THE PLAYING FIELD THAT IS CONSIDERED OUT OF BOUNDS.

BONUS LINE:

A LINE THAT GIVES THE RAIDER AN EXTRA POINT IF THEY CROSS IT WHILE RAIDING AND RETURN SAFELY.

SUPER RAID:

A RAID IN WHICH THE RAIDER SCORES THREE OR MORE POINTS.

DO OR DIE RAID:-

A MANDATORY RAID WHERE THE RAIDER MUST SCORE, OR THEY WILL BE OUT.

ALL-OUT:-

WHEN ALL PLAYERS OF A TEAM ARE OUT, RESULTING IN BONUS POINTS FOR THE OPPONENT.

REVIVAL:

THE PROCESS OF BRINGING AN OUT PLAYER BACK INTO THE GAME WHEN THEIR TEAM SCORES A POINT.

SUPER TACKLE:-

A TACKLE PERFORMED BY THREE OR FEWER DEFENDERS THAT RESULTS IN TWO POINTS.

COURT:-

THE PLAYING AREA OR FIELD.

TOE TOUCH:-

A RAIDER’S MOVE TO TOUCH A DEFENDER WITH THEIR TOE TO SCORE A POINT.

SCORPION KICK:-

A RAIDER’S MOVE TO TOUCH A DEFENDER BY KICKING BACKWARD.

DUBKI:

A RAIDER’S MOVE TO DIVE BENEATH DEFENDERS TO AVOID BEING TACKLED.

PURSUIT:

WHEN A DEFENDER CHASES A RAIDER INTO THEIR OWN HALF TO CATCH THEM.

TIME-OUT:

A BREAK CALLED BY THE TEAMS OR REFEREE.

EMPTY RAID:-

A RAID IN WHICH THE RAIDER FAILS TO SCORE ANY POINTS.

TECHNICAL POINT:-

POINTS AWARDED TO A TEAM DUE TO AN ERROR OR FOUL BY THE OPPONENT.

RAIDING SIDE:-

THE TEAM WHOSE RAIDER IS CURRENTLY ATTEMPTING TO SCORE.

DEFENDING SIDE:-

THE TEAM TRYING TO STOP THE RAIDER FROM SCORING.
