PART A — COMPLETE THEORY
1. INTRODUCTION TO PLANT KINGDOM
The plant kingdom includes a wide variety of organisms ranging from simple, unicellular or colonial algae to highly complex flowering plants.
The major groups traditionally studied in the Plant Kingdom are:
- Algae
- Bryophytes
- Pteridophytes
- Gymnosperms
- Angiosperms
These groups show a progressive increase in:
Body complexity
Development of vascular tissues
Differentiation of plant body
Independence from water for reproduction
Development of seeds
Development of flowers and fruits
Broad evolutionary sequence
Algae → Bryophytes → Pteridophytes → Gymnosperms → Angiosperms
This sequence represents increasing structural complexity, although plant evolution is not simply a straight ladder.
2. ALGAE
Algae are primarily aquatic, photosynthetic organisms.
They may occur in:
Freshwater
Marine water
Moist soil
Tree trunks
Rocks
Other moist habitats
The plant body of algae is generally a thallus, meaning it is not differentiated into true roots, stems and leaves.
Important characteristics
Mostly aquatic.
Photosynthetic.
Body is generally thalloid.
Vascular tissues are absent.
Reproduction may be vegetative, asexual or sexual.
Sexual reproduction may be isogamous, anisogamous or oogamous depending upon the group.

Asexual reproduction commonly occurs through biflagellate zoospores.
Sexual reproduction may be:
Isogamous
Anisogamous
Oogamous
depending upon the species.
A recent NEET question tested several of these Phaeophyceae characteristics together.
6. RHODOPHYCEAE — RED ALGAE
Red algae are predominantly marine.

| Examples | Chlamydomonas, Spirogyra | Fucus, Sargassum | Polysiphonia, Porphyra |
8. BRYOPHYTES
Bryophytes are small, non-vascular plants generally found in moist and shady habitats.
Examples:
Riccia
Marchantia
Funaria
Sphagnum
Anthoceros
They are commonly called the amphibians of the plant kingdom because they live on land but require water for sexual reproduction.
Major characteristics
Vascular tissues absent.
True roots absent.
Rhizoids may be present.
Gametophyte is dominant.
Sporophyte remains attached to the gametophyte.
Water is required for fertilisation.
9. BRYOPHYTE GAMETOPHYTE
The dominant plant body is the gametophyte.
It produces:
Antheridia → male sex organs
Archegonia → female sex organs
The male gametes are generally flagellated and require water to reach the egg.
10. LIVERWORTS
Examples:
Marchantia
Riccia
In Marchantia, asexual reproduction can occur through gemmae.
Gemmae
Gemmae are small multicellular structures involved in vegetative reproduction.
They are produced inside gemma cups in Marchantia.
11. MOSSES
Examples:
Funaria
Polytrichum
Sphagnum
The life cycle of moss includes:
Spore → protonema → leafy gametophore → gametangia → fertilisation → sporophyte → capsule → spores
Protonema
The protonema is the early gametophytic stage of moss.
It develops from the spore.
12. SPOROPHYTE OF FUNARIA
The sporophyte of Funaria consists of:
- Foot
- Seta
- Capsule
The foot remains embedded in the gametophyte and absorbs nutrients.
The seta supports the capsule.
The capsule produces spores.
13. PTERIDOPHYTES
Pteridophytes are the first terrestrial plants to possess well-developed vascular tissues.
Examples:
Psilotum
Selaginella
Equisetum
Pteris
Adiantum
Dryopteris
They are commonly referred to as vascular cryptogams.
Major characteristics
Vascular tissues present.
True roots, stems and leaves are present.
Sporophyte is dominant.
Reproduction occurs through spores.
Seeds are absent.
Flowers and fruits are absent.
Water is generally required for fertilisation.
14. PTERIDOPHYTE SPOROPHYTE
The dominant plant body is the sporophyte.
It is differentiated into:
Roots
Stem
Leaves
Leaves may be small or large.
In ferns, large leaves are called fronds.
15. PROTHALLUS
The gametophyte of many pteridophytes is called the prothallus.
It is generally:
Small
Green
Photosynthetic
Free-living
It produces:
Antheridia
Archegonia
Water is required for movement of the male gametes to the archegonia.
16. HOMOSPORY AND HETEROSPORY
Homospory
Production of only one type of spore.
Example:
Pteris
Heterospory
Production of two types of spores:
- Microspores
- Megaspores
Examples:
Selaginella
Salvinia
Heterospory is an important evolutionary step toward the development of the seed habit.
17. GYMNOSPERMS
Gymnosperms are seed-producing plants in which the ovules are not enclosed by an ovary wall.
Therefore, their seeds are called naked seeds.
Examples:
Cycas
Pinus
Ginkgo
Gnetum
Ephedra
Major characteristics
Well-developed vascular tissues.
Dominant sporophyte.
Seeds present.
Ovules exposed.
Flowers absent.

Takes longer to mature
19. CYCAS
Cycas is a gymnosperm.
Important characteristics:
Dioecious.
Male and female plants are separate.
Large pinnate leaves.
Coralloid roots occur.
It is often described as a living fossil because of its retention of several primitive features.
20. ANGIOSPERMS
Angiosperms are flowering plants.
They are the most diverse group of plants.
Their characteristic feature is that:
Ovules are enclosed within an ovary.
After fertilisation:
Ovary → Fruit
and
Ovule → Seed
Major characteristics
Flowers present.
Seeds enclosed within fruits.
Well-developed vascular tissues.

21. MONOCOTS AND DICOTS
Traditional angiosperm classification divides flowering plants into:
Monocotyledons
One cotyledon.
Parallel venation is common.
Fibrous/adventitious root system.
Floral parts generally in multiples of three.
Vascular bundles generally scattered in stem.
Examples:
Maize
Wheat
Rice
Lily
Dicotyledons
Two cotyledons.
Reticulate venation is common.
Tap root system is common.
Floral parts commonly in multiples of four or five.
Vascular bundles generally arranged in a ring.
Examples:
Pea
Gram
Mustard
Sunflower
22. ALTERNATION OF GENERATIONS
Plant life cycles generally involve alternation between:
Gametophyte
Haploid (n)
Produces gametes.
Sporophyte
Diploid (2n)
Produces spores through meiosis.
The relative dominance of these generations differs among plant groups.
23. LIFE CYCLE PATTERNS
Haploid life cycle
The haploid phase is dominant.
Example:
Spirogyra
Haplo-diplontic life cycle
Both haploid and diploid phases are multicellular.
Examples include:
Some algae

Pteridophytes
Diplontic life cycle
Diploid sporophyte is dominant and the gametophytes are highly reduced.
Typical example:
